Castle [[Hillfarm]] is one of the oldest fortifications still standing strong in the entire region around [[Salisbury]]. Together with Castle [[Wardour]] and Castle Woodhouse it was built in pre-roman eras by the tribesmen of [[Belgae]] and [[Durotriges]]. However, when the [[romans]] came they took over the castles and kept them as defensive positions against incursions. Since Castle [[Wardour]] was destroyed in 445 and Castle Woodhouse was rebuilt as a Motte-and-Bailey, [[Hillfarm]] is the last Earthworks [[Hillfort]] in [[Salisbury]] still standing. The castle is held by the Dux of [[Glevum]] since roman days, and is not controlled by the Lord of [[Salisbury]]. The castle is a settlement surrounded by a large earthwork defensive line. The old roman troop-buildings have been destroyed since many years, and now many people from the surrounding area live inside the enclosure.
