They had always had sheep at Hindon. At least for as long as Brynach could remember. He could recall several occasions when his father had been out with some hunter from Wick trying to find a lost animal or wolfs roaming the area. Brynach remembered vividly how Melkin had cursed the dumb animals, as he saw a white cloud trotting at the edge of the forest. The lamb was small, probably no more than 8 weeks or so, and it disappeared, gently eating its way into the forest. Brynach bent down where it had entered, and looked under the bushes. Nothing. This was Modron’s forest, if he didn’t go after the lamb now it would be lost. This was Mondron’s forest though, he might get lost too if he went in after it. He stood there thinking for a while before stringing the bow. The lamb was a lamb and he was a knight, it wasn’t really much of a question what was right. It was as if the forest was watching as he walked. Then, a glance of white fur and he changed direction. Nothing. A bleat sounded from behind a tree and he followed. There, a snake, as thick as the lamb’s head, was slowly urchin its way toward the defenceless animal. That wasn’t a normal snake, was all Brynach thought as he raised the bow. He had never seen anything like it. It was brown and yellow, spotted, freckled even, with a flat head and large fangs. He released the arrow, it missed and he drew his dagger. The snake jerked about trying to escape him. He cut it, cut off its tail that curled into a circle as the reptile escaped into the forest. How strange it had moved. Was it perhaps not a snake after all? Brynach turned toward the lamb. A tall man, dressed in a druid’s cloak was kneeling next to it. Brynach saw tattoos on the arm and hand extended to the animal. Perplexed he stood there watching. The man rose and nodded toward Brynach. “This lamb is safe,” said the druid, “for now.” “Do I know you?” asked Brynach curiously. This might be one of uncle Cadry’s old friends he guessed. “No,” answered the man and Brynach bent down to pick up the tail of the snake, “but your father did.” He looked up. Then man was gone. The tail of the snake was still twitching in his hand. The lamb came toward him where he was crouching. “It couldn’t have been,” Brynach said out loud turning around, then looking at the small lamb. “Or could it?” he asked. He picked it up and walked back the way he had come. As he entered the Hindon grounds Aurianne met him. “What’s happened to you?” she said clutching her large belly. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this calm.” The figure of her, the kindness, the understanding between them… Brynach knew that they had always been good to each other. They had always respected each other. Now, for the first time, he also knew that he loved her. “Somehow,” he smiled, stroking the head of the lamb, “I know that we’re having a boy.”
