A week passes, Maid Jenna looks to survive, scarred. Lady Morgawse here to speak to Ellen on King lots behalf, of what, no one but they know. Preparations for an expedition to Rydyschan underway. Cynyr and Ennis manages to persuade Lady Mary of Gentian to send archers and knights, and Pomponia promises two knights of her own. Gwendolyn herself will not come, cannot put herself at risk, but will send her signet ring to help rally the local lords. She also knows of a superb huntsman in the village of Pyke, who might be inclined to help. Gentian sends 10 knights and 50 archers, Maelgwyn calls in a personal favour to persuade Ellen to commit more, sending a full 25 knights in addition to the the famous four. All in all, 41 knights, 50 archers, and some 10 footmen leave Salisbury. Cynyr persuades Ellen to pay half the fee for a months service of Cadors core troop, Maelgwyn, Cadry and Ennis pitches in, but Cynyr bears most of the remainder. The plan, then. Cador and his core company will move as unseen as they can north to Cambridge, to waylay and capture the Wallingford brother who resides there. The Locrinus knights will ride Towards wallingford, drawing attention and appearing smaller than they are to bait out the brothers, to waylay and capture them if possible. If all else fails, attempt to rally the Lords of Rydyschan to help. They enter Rydyschan, and Maelgwyn insits on burning a peasant village to draw attention. Cynyr argues against it, but at least manages to get the company to let the farmers leave with their lives, spreading the word of ”Sir Maelgwyn the Bulwarks personal crusade of vengeance” against the Wallingfords for the destruction of his familys ancient heirloom and insult to his person. Most of the company is hidden, only ten knights do the deed. The two brothers from Pomponia insist on participating, which makes Cynyr suspicious. It turns out they take slaves, disregarding the order to leave the peasants alive. Confrontation is barely avoided, as the deed is only discovered after the fact. As the peasants run, a trap is set. A good location chosen by Cadry around the village, archers hidden in the woods behind the access road, knights behind a hill, more knights and archers hidden in the burnt houses. Come the night a company approaches. They use decoys dressed as saxons to lure the knights out of the village, a ruse so successful it backfires. Sir Cadry and others, filled with hate, make short work of both the decoys and the knights who charge on their heel. Ennis is badly wounded and Cynyr turns back from alerting those still hiding in the village to help him. His spear takes the knight in the side and unhorses him, and ennis swordstroke keeps him down. He yields, and Cynyr, knowing his friend is in dire need of any boon, gifts him the capture. It turns out to be the self styled Baron Bastile the Wallingford. Ennis wound festers in Cadrys care, and he and the strange knight return with the prisoner to Gentian together with other wounded knights. After the victory the rest of the company continues to wallingford at Maegwyns insistance and attempts the same ruse, unsuccessfully, and torches another village nearby. The huntsman refuses to help those who bring fire to his lands, and Cynyr confronts and runs the two brother off before they can continue with their slaving work. The elder wallingford refuses to leave his castle, refuses any honorable duel and is willing to trade his brothers lives for keeping his castle and his lands. The remaining company is not enough to besiege the castle, or stop supplies coming into it. The matter is at an impasse. Trying to rally the local lords proves unsuccessful, it seems they hold no love for the Wallingfords, and none for Gwendolyn. She is seen as a bad lord and inspires no loyalty. In addition, troubling information comes to light. According to the elder Wallingford, the Countess has sworn to kill them all. When Cador returns with another Wallingford in tow, turning him over as Cynyrs prisoner, Cynyr acts. He sends word to Sarum, this is our chance. Have two of the brothers, can ransom them for funds and retain Cadors services, perhaps take the castle and end the civil strife. Gwendolyn replies, hand the prisoners to her, and she will hire the required troops to take Wallingford castle. Cynyr bends his thoughts to the situation at hand, and when the companies reunite he and Ennis question their prisoners. This, says Cynyr, is a conundrum. Either the Countess will break her word and ransom the brothers to hire troops, or she will honour her oath and kill them, leading to no resolution of the situation in Rydyschan and no gain for the Alliance of Locrinus. After some thought he suggests turning the prisoners over to Lady Ellen, letting her make the necessary arrangements and hiring troops if possible. When the company returns to Sarum, it is done. For this gift and their service, Sir Ennis receives five libra worth of land to Hindon, and Sir Cynyr is gifted the manor of Winterbourne Ganet, becoming a Vassal knight.
