Those who truly shape Britains history take centre stage as Domina Supera (Ennis Wife), Marion (Maelgwyns wife) and Brangwen (Cadrys wife) visit eagle square at the Rock. They are helping Lady Ellen prepare a feast. They tangle with the Madman Sewell, Supera haggles over wares and Marion searches in vain for songbirds to brighten dreary chillmark. Guiseppe, the Architecht formerly working on Hindon manor explains an issue with the last part of the great wall being built around the Rock. Beggars are impeding the destruction of beggars gate, owing to an old Legend of the fool of Sarum. Brutus, the father of Britain, his son Locrinus, Logres founder, Locrinus son Salis, and Salis daughter Sarum. Furthern down that august line, King Lear and his daughter Cordelia. The fool that saved her father was allowed to live in a room above the gate that came to be known as fools’ gate. Tradition states that any who pass through leave their pride at the door and give to the poor. The three women try to mediate, Brangwen suggests giving the patron saint of beggars and fools a better room and though many agree a full on brawl soon erupts. Lord Amig, Contable of Sarum, arrives to restore order. Sewell is apprehended and thrown into the dungeon. The ladies advise Ellen to either set aside a new room, or try to build the old structure into the new. A meagre feast is held. None of their husbands have returned from Ireland. The handsome Prince Mark of Cornwall is visiting. The gossips ply their trade and barbs at others with sharp tongues. The evening passes with egg painting, playing and gossiping. Rumor tells that the men in Vagon met Sir Maelgwyn last year. “We should go” agree the ladies. “An adventure like our husbands have!” “Well, maybe not quite like that”. Sir Leo is press ganged into service. Some days later the ladies ride into Vagon, a still bewildered Leo in tow. They are challenged at the gate, and admitted with threadbare curtesy by Sir Ogdam, the Gweir who holds the fort. It is clear the Gweir consider themselves rightful owners of the place, and no subjects of Countess Ellen. The castle is decrepit and ill kept. They are told that this is not a place for women, and barely allowed to stay the night before moving on. In the night Marion wakes to see a creature of the Fae tamper with things in a chest. She and Supera take some Cornwallish coins and documents of trade, and follow the creature which escapes out the well once discovered. They are no longer welcome in Vagon, and Brangwen wants to go to Woodhouse, a fort fallen to the fae. A scout, who had seen maelgwyn, had gone there and not returned. The fae knows things, perhaps they or the missing scout know where their husbands are? Supera thinks it unwise, but Marion is inspired by the fiery pagan. “We’ve been sitting in warm rooms with our embroidery all our lives, now is the time to go to woodhouse and find our husbands!” Sir Leo tries to protest, but is lambasted into submission. Slow going through lands darkened by some curse. In the night the company is awoken by dead, bloated, fishlike things attacking from the marshes. The ladies men at arms fight valiantly, sir Leo slaying several of the monsters. Supera draws her knife and alone among the ladies claims a kill of her own. One of Brangwens lineagemen fall, poisoned, and soon dies. They reach woodhouse with a green banner above. Winds come out of nowehere, and something Brangwen names a spriggan appears. Things with thin white limbs and childrens heads shuffle close. Several people around the castle, moving oddly, and one very tall man comes to meet them. Incredibly ugly. He Serves Drajj, now lord of the castle as the forest has consumed it. Brangwen asks for the scout, who has been seen and eaten, The ladies are horrified, and Supera mentions the mans mother. The gathered creatures go wild, banging on whatever is at hand and chanting “mother, mother”. The creature says the man spoke a lot, and it doesn’t like when food makes too much noise. It ate its memories though. It can tell them if they pay, fair price. It does not know how to get their husbands back, but takes precious metals in exchange for where they went. They went to the green island. Did it know what they were going to do there? They went with the sorcerer and soldiers. The creature hates him, killed its brother in the war. They want to find something, and hide something. Some prophecy comes over the creature, and it chants “when the full moon next stands on the hills where the giants dance, a window will be open. You will have your chance! Place what the small creature held on the altar” It is Stonehenge, only three days hence! The prophecy was a favour from the lord of the castle. The women thank the creature and leave, making haste for the circle of stones.
