During the spring knights arrive from north western Salisbury and report that Cornish troops have raided Salisbury and the main force have invaded Summerland and taken both Bristol and Bath. A certain Sir Dywell rides from the south of Salisbury to report that King Cerdic and Chief Port have marched from Suth Seaxe and invaded Salisbury. They are heading for Sarum itself. From the north comes a messenger saying that King Nanteleod is marching south and that he intends to fight the Angles in the east. The knights of Salisbury are ordered by the Countess to ride to Wanborough and meet up with the Kings mainforce. All footmen and archers are ordered to stay in Sarum and the other castles in Salisbury. The knights are to avoid any confrontation with Cornish troops. Sir Cynyr voices his dissent to this decision on the account of Salisbury having promised to aid Jagent. The order gets modified so that the knights are allowed to harry Cornwall's troops but not engage them head on. When riding by Woodhouse, the knights spot strange shapes that move across the fields and is reminded that Madoc’s old castle is nowadays held by faeries. About the same time a giant shape swoops out of the skies and grabs one of the knights. It is an enormous griffon, far larger than any beast of that kind usually turns out. Sir Cadry fires his bow and hits the creature which makes the griffon let go of the knight. Unfortunately, the knight breaks his back in the fall and is euthanised. Riding through the forest of gloom into Summerland, the knights spot track from about 1000 troops that have moved through the area. They also find fresher tracks from a scouting party. Deciding to act against the scouts, the knights sneak up on the scouts and order them to surrender. The loyalty of the scouts won’t let them go down without a fight however and are slaughtered to the last man. Once the knights meet up with Nanteleod’s army, the King informs them that as a favour for past deeds, he will lead the army into Salisbury and attack King Cerdic before marching east towards the Angles. The saxon army lift their siege of Sarum and retreat. King Nanteleod pursues them and manages to catch up to them outside of Levcomagus where a short battle is fought with King Nanteleod's wins a slight victory. In this battle, Sir Ennis is grievously wounded and taken prisoner by traitorous knights from former Hantonne. Sir Cynyr also suffers injuries that leaves him bedridden. King Cerdic retreats into Suth Seaxe and Nanteleod does not pursue but rather marches east through Silchester into East Seaxe where another short battle is fought outside of Roystone. The battle doesn’t have any clear winner since both sides tries to preserve their forces. After the battle of Roystone, the army marches north towards Cambridge and there they meet up with Duke Corneus’ forces from Lindsey. Duke Corneus and Duke Ulfius meet and reluctantly shake hands, despite not getting along usually. Such is the conviction and drive of King Nanteleod. However, many knights, including the Salisbury knights have served their 40 days of mandatory war service. Many are talking of returning home. King Nanteleod decides to address all the assembled troops and holds a fiery speech about the fact that despite our many differences we are still all men of Britain. He speaks about how after the battle St Albans the island fell to infighting when there was no King. The also says that the only ones who have truly profited from this are the Saxons. He says that we must all come together and take the battle to the Saxons and drive them back. After this rousing speech most men decide to stay at their own cost despite their time being over. Lord Elad, leading the Salisbury forces states that he will stay but that every man has to decide for himself if he will stay and fight or not. Most, including the Hillfort knights, stay. Thus it came to be that a huge battle was fought outside of Cambridge. King Nanteleod’s forces assisted by Duke Ulfius and Duke Corneus armies goes on to fight the forces of King Aethelswith from East Seaxe aided by some elements of King Cerdic’s forces, though Cerdic himself is not present. Among the Salisbury knights, Sir Cadry and Sir Maelgwyn are eager to once again engage the Saxons. Sir Cynyr, being still wounded reluctantly mounts his horse and join up, quite prepared to die. Unexpectedly, Brynach son of Sir Melkin, is made a knight and is allowed to take his uncle place in the unit, despite being only 20 years of age. The battle rages back and forth for several hours and it looks like the Saxons are pushing back the Cymric army. The battle turns when, in the middle of the battle, the men from Hillfort spots the personal guard of King Athelswith. Recklessly the knights slowly push themselves towards the Saxon king and has to fight his heorthgeneat bodyguards. Sir Cadry and Sir Maelgwyn butcher their way through the elite Saxons while Sir Cynyr is rendered unconscious in the tough fighting. Sir Brynach however shows that he is a true bannerman and kills two of the Saxons to protect the fallen Sir Cynyr whilst Sir Cadry and Sir Maelgwyn attacks the saxon king. Aethelswith is a terrifying warrior, tapping into a primal hate that not cymri can match. When he fights Sir Maelgwyn and Sir Cadry this is unfortunately not enough and the pair, having fought together for close 30 years, butchers the saxon king. The death of their king breaks the saxon fighting spirit and the Saxons rout. After the battle, King Nanteleod hands out royal favours. Sir Cadry asks for knighthood for his sons. The king promises that his three eldest sons will be made knights when they are old enough. Sir Maelgwyn asks for funds for his convent which the king grants. Ser Brynach ask for a good woman to marry. Sir Cynyr asks for help in killing the monstrous griffin that haunts Salisbury and is granted the use of royal Cambrian archers when the time comes. After 4 weeks, the knights ride home. Baron Robert is to become a squire next year. At court, Lord Amig mentions that the countess might not swear fealty to King Nanteleod but he is not certain why. The knights tell Lord Amig and Lord Elad about the scandalous rumours that Robert might not be legitimate which causes them great consternation.
