Castle Hillfarm is one of the oldest fortifications still standing strong in the entire region around Salisbury. Together with Castle Wardour and Castle Woodhouse it was built in pre-roman eras by the tribesmen of Belgae and Durotriges. However, when the romans came they took over the castles and kept them as defensive positions against incursions. Since Castle Wardour was destroyed in 445 and Castle Woodhouse was rebuilt as a Motte-and-Bailey, Hillfarm is the last Earthworks Hillfort in Salisbury still standing.

The castle is held by the Dux of Glevum since roman days, and is not controlled by the Lord of Salisbury.

The castle is a settlement surrounded by a large earthwork defensive line. The old roman troop-buildings have been destroyed since many years, and now many people from the surrounding area live inside the enclosure.
