Named after the chalk mine it contains, this hundred has been leased by the King directly to the bishop of Venta. Thus, it is not part of the count of Salisbury’s domain. The spring of the Ebble river is found in this hundred, as is the stone circle at Broad Chalke, where the hundred court is held. The pasture land at the spring of the Nadder river is an outlier of this hundred. The hundred is not densely populated. Hundred court is held at Ebbesbourne Wake.

Since the death of Uther, the Bishop of Venta has retained the hundred as his own. He petitions Lady Ellen constantly to avoid political issues.
